In my continuing efforts to boost my Nanowrimo word count today, I paid a visit to the nanowrimo forums. I was searching for a tried and true method for beating those writing slumps, getting past distractions, and forcing myself to write more than 1000 words every other day. I was about to give up the search after reading the 15th suggestion to disable my internet or use a pencil and paper when I came across the ultimate strategy: writeordie.com
I immediately visited the site to find I could use the web version for free...so I gave it a go. Basically you set the following: a word goal for yourself--I chose 1000 words, a time goal--45 minutes, a consequence--normal (more on this in a bit), and a grace period level--strict.
The grace period level--forgiving, strict, or evil--determines how long the program will wait after you stop typing or idle too long before it enacts your punishment. Here's how the website describes the different levels of consequences:
Gentle Mode: A certain amount of time after you stop writing, a box will pop up, gently reminding you to continue writing.
Normal Mode: If you persistently avoid writing, you will be played a most unpleasant sound. The sound will only stop if you resume writing.
Kamikaze Mode: Keep writing or your work will unwrite itself.
Fortunately, I chose Normal Mode for my first write-or-die experience or I would have lost a lot of work. Unfortunately, I avoiding writing persistently enough in normal mode to have the unpleasant sound thrust upon my unsuspecting ears. I was zoning out, staring at my mostly blank screen when the unpleasant sound started clashing with the lovely music I had playing. I was confused at first and then realized that my consequence for failing to continue writing was that I be subjected to the Hanson Brothers singing MmmBop. Needless to say, I immediately began typing again...anything to make the pain...and grade school memories...go away!
Thank you, writeordie.com. Thank you for getting me to 1100 words in 45 minutes. I owe you a big one!
That is awesome!!! Is that for real? Mmmbop brings back great memories, not bad ones! Keep up the great work. Miss you.
ReplyDeleteIt's me, Becky, by the way. It wouldn't let me post as Alaskan strongs.
Still a favorite at dances...but I'm sure not something you'd want while writing. :)
