Tonight I did something I've done a few times before--I finished an 800+ page book in basically three days. Past similar accomplishments have occurred with Harry Potter books 5-7, The Hunger Games, and my favorite series The Kingkiller Chornicles (Name of the Wind, Wise Man's Fear, and the as of now untitled final installment). This time, however, I read all 840ish page of Inheritance in a rather short period of time...including a 6-hour reading binge on Monday which was only interrupted for one bathroom break and a sandwich.
Inheritance is the final installment in the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini. I've been reading this series since junior year of college. I can still remember reading the first book, Eragon, while laying on a blanket in front of my apartment. I'm sure my college roommates could relate to Ben on what it's like to live with a book-absorbed-dragon-obsessed Angela.
It's hard to say what I liked best about the book/series but I shall try.
1) The characters are great. There's a character for everyone to love, hate, root for, and wish evil upon. I am undecided at this point on my favorite character, but I'm hoping for some clarity as the final moments sink in.
2) The rules of magic make sense. This series, along with the aforementioned Kingkiller Chronicles, deal with magic in a logical manner. Unlike other series I have read, the energy of the magic comes from the person, limiting what a person is capable of. It always bothered me in Harry Potter how they could seemingly do whatever they wanted without tiring or limitations.
3) The setting is excellent. I want to live in Alagaesia. Elves, dwarfs, dragons, giant snails--what more could a person want?
4) The ending is...well, I'm not going to say anything in case any of you are reading the series. Let's just say that I am satisfied...which will mean more to those of you who understand my high standards for endings.
I will miss the fun I've had while reading these books and I look forward to when I'll have time to read all four of them in quick succession. I would love to discuss the series with someone who's read it all..so feel free to comment and let me know. We could do coffee and search for the next great fantasy to steal our hearts and immerse us in another world for another three days!
